So what are the legal bedroom requirements in BC anyway?
Here's what the BC Building Code (2012) says:
126.96.36.199 Egress Windows or Doors for Bedrooms
Except where the suite is sprinklered, each bedroom shall have at least one outside window or exterior door openable from the inside without the use of keys, tools or special knowledge and without the removal of sashes or hardware.
188.8.131.52. Areas of Bedrooms sizes
Except as provided in Articles 184.108.40.206. and 220.127.116.11., bedrooms in dwelling units shall have an area not less than 7 m² where built-in cabinets are not provided and not less than 6 m² where built-in cabinets are provided.
There is a size requirement of 75 sqft, or 65 sqft if there is a closet or similar built in.
A window is not required if the space has a sprinkler
So there ya go, a window and/or closet is not always required however, must meet other legal bedroom requirements in BC and most notably, a fire sprinkler.
